what do I wear? what do I keep? who am I now? who am I becoming?
the closet is just where the confusion becomes visible.
InStyleClosets is a visual operating system for your wardrobe, your identity, and your life. not a decluttering service. not a stylist. something stranger and more useful.
we help you see what's already there.
because the closet reveals the story. your story.
let me be your translator.

this is the question at the center of everything we do.
not: does it spark joy?
not: have you worn it in the last year?
because sometimes the problem isn't the sweater.
it's the story.
the breakup self bought things.
the promotion self bought things.
the vacation self bought things.
the grief self bought things.
the hopeful self bought things.
the version of you who was finally going to get her life together bought things.

ego is where you'll find nothing but honesty.
these are the clothes you actually wear.
the jeans you reach for first.
the sweater that's always on the chair.
the shoes by the front door.
the things that fit your real life. not the life you're planning, not the life you feel obligated to perform, but the one you're actually living right now.
it's usually the biggest section.
turns out your favorite outfit was never the problem.
the seven pairs of black leggings can stay.

@InStyleClosets
@InStyleClosets
InStyleClosets started in a hotel room in Charlotte while I was getting ready for an African boarding school alumni gala, planning a bubble bath, and accidentally solving a problem I didn't know I had.
I was thinking about closets. and then I was thinking about identity. and then I realized those were the same conversation.
I'm a sociologist by training. a teacher by practice. a filmmaker by calling. and apparently a closet philosopher by accident.
I was thinking about closets.
Then I was thinking about identity.
Then I realized those were the same conversation.
For years, I thought I had a clothing problem.
What I actually had was a decision problem.
What do I wear? What do I keep? Who am I now? Who am I becoming?
As a sociologist, I couldn't stop noticing that closets work like personal archives. They contain our aspirations. Our obligations. Our past selves.
I started photographing my own wardrobe. Not to organize it. To understand it.
That's when the framework appeared: Id. Ego. Superego. Not as psychology. As wardrobe categories.
I called my sister. She said: build it.
So I'm building it.
The Charlotte version is the short version. The longer version involves Detroit, sociology, teaching, filmmaking, several identity crises, and at least one television show.
We'll get there. 💋

Each day, one category.
Tops. Bottoms. Shoes. Accessories.

Every closet contains three versions of you.
🌸 Id — the self shopping for the life she wants.
🌿 Ego — the self getting dressed this morning.
✨ Superego — the self trying to make everyone proud.

Every intentional decision creates value.
Some decisions save time. Some save money. Some save both.

message David
David reads this before Mac. Be specific. Tell him what broke, what you were doing, and what device you're on.
David receives this first. Mac gets involved only if necessary. response time: 24--48 hours. he's busy.

🌸 from your id bestie
babe. she's been shopping again.
june 2026 · monthly letter
Your fantasy self had a big month. She bought the silk blouse for the dinner party that hasn't been scheduled yet. She found the perfect blazer for the pitch meeting she's manifesting. She added three things to a saved folder called "when I'm ready."
I'm not going to tell you to stop. The fantasy self isn't delusional — she's aspirational. She knows exactly who you're becoming. She's just living there a little early.
The blazer isn't for who you are. It's for who you're walking toward. That's not a problem. That's a plan.
This month your id closet is holding 14 pieces. One piece has been there for three years. Which version of you bought it? Is she still on her way?

okay but you've been dressing so well lately.
june 2026 · monthly letter
Can we just talk about the wide leg trousers for a second? You've worn them eleven times this month. That's not an accident. That's a relationship.
Your ego closet is the most honest section. These are the pieces that don't require an occasion. They don't require a mood. They just fit your life.
The ego closet doesn't lie. Everything in here gets worn. Everything in here is actually you.
21 pieces. Three of them you've had for over four years and they still feel exactly right. That's not luck. That's taste.

we need to talk about the interview blazer.
june 2026 · monthly letter
You haven't worn it since 2022. I know. You know. The blazer knows. It's been hanging there doing its best impression of professionalism and nobody has asked it to perform in three years.
Your superego closet is about whose idea of you is still taking up space in your wardrobe. We're not throwing them out. We're just naming them.
There's a difference between dressing for the life you've chosen and dressing for the life someone else chose for you.
12 pieces this month. That's actually lower than average. You've been making decisions. It shows.

You dress for the person you're becoming, not the one you've already been.
outfits you didn't know you had
23
complete looks, already in your closet.
wide leg trousers + silk blouse + good sneakers → creative professional, no effort
oversized linen + structured bag + heels → the main character, Charlotte edition
statement coat + white tee + trousers → the one that makes strangers ask
"You dress for the person you're becoming, not the one you've already been."
— your closet, probably
The real origin story is much stranger than this one. Fortunately, we have a television show for that. 💋
