most people don't have too many clothes.

they have too many decisions.

what do I wear? what do I keep? who am I now? who am I becoming?

the closet is just where the confusion becomes visible.

InStyleClosets is a visual operating system for your wardrobe, your identity, and your life. not a decluttering service. not a stylist. something stranger and more useful.

we help you see what's already there.

because the closet reveals the story. your story.

let me be your translator.

step one: photograph everything.

every item.
every drawer.
every hanger.

every thing you own but never wear and somehow can't break up with.

the camera is kinder than the closet.

this is the question at the center of everything we do.

not:
does it spark joy?

not:
have you worn it in the last year?

because sometimes the problem isn't the sweater.

it's the story.

the breakup self bought things.

the promotion self bought things.

the vacation self bought things.

the grief self bought things.

the hopeful self bought things.

the version of you who was finally going to get her life together bought things.

what part of you bought this?

the id closet is where your fantasy self lives.

the ball gown for the event that never happened.

the structured blazer for the version of you who has her life completely together.

the dress that costs more than your rent because Future You deserved it.

we don't throw these away.

we introduce them to reality.

ego is where you'll find nothing but honesty.

these are the clothes you actually wear.

the jeans you reach for first.

the sweater that's always on the chair.

the shoes by the front door.

the things that fit your real life. not the life you're planning, not the life you feel obligated to perform, but the one you're actually living right now.

it's usually the biggest section.

turns out your favorite outfit was never the problem.

the seven pairs of black leggings can stay.

superego is the hardest one.

these are the clothes you keep because someone else expects you to.

the interview blazer your mother bought.

the dress your ex liked.

the version of yourself everyone was rooting for.

sometimes the item stays.

sometimes the guilt goes.

the Closet Map is where everything becomes visible.

every shirt.

every sweater.

every pair of jeans.

every thing you forgot you owned.

photograph it once.

we'll organize the rest.

because most people don't need more clothes.

they need a better map.

InStyleClosets started in a hotel room in Charlotte while I was getting ready for an African boarding school alumni gala, planning a bubble bath, and accidentally solving a problem I didn't know I had.

I was thinking about closets. and then I was thinking about identity. and then I realized those were the same conversation.

I'm a sociologist by training. a teacher by practice. a filmmaker by calling. and apparently a closet philosopher by accident.

I was thinking about closets.

Then I was thinking about identity.

Then I realized those were the same conversation.

For years, I thought I had a clothing problem.

What I actually had was a decision problem.

What do I wear? What do I keep? Who am I now? Who am I becoming?

As a sociologist, I couldn't stop noticing that closets work like personal archives. They contain our aspirations. Our obligations. Our past selves.

I started photographing my own wardrobe. Not to organize it. To understand it.

That's when the framework appeared: Id. Ego. Superego. Not as psychology. As wardrobe categories.

I called my sister. She said: build it.

So I'm building it.

The Charlotte version is the short version. The longer version involves Detroit, sociology, teaching, filmmaking, several identity crises, and at least one television show.

We'll get there. 💋

before you buy anything new,

see everything you already have.

the Closet Map is a visual inventory of your wardrobe.

photograph everything.

we'll organize the rest.

because most people don't need more options.

they need a clearer picture.
